A Living Hope

“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” Jeremiah 29:11 NIV

Imagine taking a land mass the size of the State of Maryland and placing it on an island in the Caribbean. Now populate it with eight million people descended mostly from former African slaves and create a history of foreign domination, dictatorship, civil war and exploitation. Add the elements of poverty, hunger, unemployment, illiteracy and fear. Then establish an unstable government plagued with corruption and warring factions to control the national interests. And finally, cast a spiritual shadow of black magic and voodooism across the land to complete the scene. What you have created in your imagination is the reality of Haiti in the 21 st Century. The despair we have felt in America in the wake of war and terrorists and hurricanes is a taste of what the people of Haiti have lived with for over 200 years. If it were not for a hope that comes from above and beyond this bleak reality, there would be no hope for them at all.
